STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahumy states the generator in V. Rakeedhoo is now only turned on for two hours per day with the hybrid PV-BESS-DG system in place to power the island.

A hybrid PV-BESS-DG system combines a photovoltaic (PV) system, battery energy storage system (BESS), and a diesel generator (DG) to provide a reliable power supply.

Fahumy, via a post on X, described Rakeedhoo as a renewable energy pioneer with the use of a hybrid PV-BESS-DG system to power the island by utilizing solar and battery storage. As such, he said the island’s generator has to only be turned on for two hours daily.

He extended gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his vision and commitment to transform 33 percent Maldives’ energy production to renewable sources.

Transforming 33 percent of Maldives’ energy production to renewable sources is a pledge of President Muizzu.

Notably, the Environment Ministry has launched a program, ‘Magey Solar’, which will provide households with solar PV systems at affordable rates; a pivotal initiative to achieve the target. A total of 750 solar PV systems will be provided to households under the initiative.
