MWSC to produce water using renewable energy in Gulhifalhu

Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has signed an MoU with Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Renewable Energy Maldives to produce water using 100 percent renewable energy in Gulhifalhu.

According to MWSC, the MoU, pertains to the demonstration of decarbonized seawater desalination system using solar power generation and NAS storage batteries.

The MoU was signed by MWSC’s Managing Director Hassan Shahid, Hitachi Zosen Corporation’s Managing Director Miyagi Taiyo, and Renewable Energy Maldives’ Chairman Dr. Ibrahim Nashid on Wednesday.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Maldivian Environment Minister Aminath Shauna and Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori.

The project involves establishing an RO plant with the capacity to produce 500 cubic meters of water per day, a 500-kilowatt solar PV system, and the installation of a 1,450-kilowatt power battery energy storage system.

The project is funded by Japan’s Global Environment Centre Foundation together with private investment from Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Renewable Energy Maldives.

MWSC said it aims to increase the usage of renewable energy in its utility services, and reduce the dependency on fuel and become an innovative company that introduces environmentally friendly technologies.

The Maldivian government has set the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and has expanded investments in renewable energy.
