A new 10,000-tonne water storage tank – the biggest in the Maldives – has been operationalized in Hulhumale’.

The large water tank was installed by the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) at its Hulhumale’ Operations Center at the cost of MVR 34.7 million.

MWSC describes the operationalization of the water tank as a critical step toward long-term water security for the tens of thousands of people who live in the greater Male’ area.

It was inaugurated by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed in a ceremony held on Sunday.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Muthalib described the water tank symbolizes the priority given by the government to ensuring water security for all.

He said that the water tank is crucial to addressing the issues that may arise given the capital’s rising population.

Meanwhile, Matheen credited his staff for their hard work in ensuring speedy and smooth installation of the water tank.

According to MWSC, the addition of the 10,000-tonne water tank increases the total water storage capacity in Hulhumale’ by 79 percent to 22,600 tonnes.

It also boosts the combined storage capacity in Male’ City and Hulhumale’ from 36,000 tonnes to 46,000 tonnes.

The MWSC hails this as “a major step forward in strengthening water security for Male' and Hulhumale'.”

Back in 2014, the Maldivian capital faced a major water crisis, when a fire at the engine room of the MWSC headquarters in Male’ cut off city-wide access to water for over a week.
