The Kudagiri Picnic Island has been fully booked for the opening day – Saturday – within hours it was opened for bookings.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) states it received overwhelming support upon opening the island for bookings Thursday. All 300 slots were fully booked within hours.
Bookings for Kudagiri can be made via website or mobile app. Each user can make one booking, and add up to seven people. Separate bookings must be made for groups of more than seven people.
HDC has also released a map of Kudagiri, developed as a picnic island for residents of the populous greater Male’ area.
While people can visit the island for free on weekends and public holidays, a two-day ticket to the island on weekdays costs MVR 50. People will also be charged an MVR 50 entrance fee.
The fees are half off for children under the age of 12.
No fees are taken for children under the age of two and adults above the age of 65.
The rates are different for migrants and tourists.
Kudagiri has huts with electricity, water and cooking facilities, which picnic goers can book if they want.
The island has a security team to maintain security and has 40 CCTV cameras installed.
Police will provide backup during weekends and public holidays.
HDC warns that action will be taken against anyone who damages the property in Kudagiri, and anyone who engages in violence will be permanently banned from the island.
