Instead of trying to free opposition leader Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, most of the leaders from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) are busy pushing their own agendas, says Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

In a tweet Friday evening, Imran said it was becoming clearer with each passing day.

“The majority of politicians in their leadership are busy pushing other, personal agendas than freeing President Yameen,” he said.

Despite Imran’s allegation, PPM and PNC continues to promote Yameen as their presidential candidate.

The opposition coalition recently held ‘Hope Conference’ and has been meeting with foreign diplomats to share their concerns over Yameen’s incarceration.

Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined USD 5 million after being found guilty of money laundering and bribery in connection to the sale of V. Aarah for resort development on December 25, 2022.

His lawyers are preparing to appeal the conviction with the High Court.
