Maldives marks over 100,000 tourist arrivals in first 23 days of 2023

Statistics from the Tourism Ministry show that Maldives recorded over 120,000 tourist arrivals in the first 23 days of 2023. 

In this regard, a total of 122,186 tourists visited in the past 23 days which is an increase of 27,000 when compared to the same period last year. In 2022, only 94,618 tourist arrivals were recorded in the first 23 days. 

The most number of tourist arrivals has been recorded from Russia contributing to 14.4 percent of total arrivals with 17,000 tourists. 

Top 5 tourist markets in 2023: 

1- Russia: 17,600

2- Italy: 12,325

3- India: 11,918

4- The United Kingdom: 10,025

5- Germany: 7,327

Direct flights from China, the top tourist market to the Maldives prior to the COVID-19 global pandemic, resumed on January 18th. In just a few days, China moved up the ranks to the seventh highest tourist market, with 2,727 tourist arrivals marking 2.2 percent of total arrivals. 

The average stay of tourists at present is 8.2 days - a figure which Tourism Ministry expects to go down once the Chinese market becomes more saturated with more arrivals. 

At present, 168 resorts are in operation with a capacity of 41,049 beds; 13 hotels with 1,640 beds, 874 guesthouses with 14,146 beds and 157 safaris with 2,901 beds.
