Much beloved former principal of Aminiya School Kusuma Welikala passed away on Saturday, December 7.
A statement was released by Ameeniyaa School, in which on behalf of the “entire Aminiya family, including all the past and present students and teachers would like to pay their tribute and respect to Madam Kusuma Welikala..."
Kusuma is the longest-serving principal in the history of Aminiya School and is noted to have brought many significant changes needed at the time.
She served over the course of two different occasions. The first of which was from February 22, 1989, till December 24, 1998. She took office for the second time on January 6, 2003. This time, she filled the role until January 1, 2005.
In addition to this, the Ministry of Education also released a message of condolences.

“We offer our deepest condolences to her beloved family members, students and friends. We will truly miss the presence of a lovable, trustworthy, and kind educator who has been a valuable member of the educational community of Maldives,” read the ministry’s statement.
Dr Amaal who at the time worked alongside Welikala as Assistant Principal spoke with Sun regarding her time at the school.
Noting that she was someone who brought important changes to the school, Dr Amaal said that she was a principal who worked for the progress of the school, as well as the future of the students.
“[she] instructed to document everything in writing. Established good values and carried on everything in a systematic manner. Gave great attention to students in moving forward.”
She highlighted that Welikala was someone who was always friendly, and who always maintained close connections with the students.
Additionally, she spoke fondly of celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary, during which Welikala was serving as principal.
The current principal of Aminiya School Naazleen Wafir spoke with Sun regarding this as well.
She expressed sadness at the passing of someone who greatly served the school, adding that the 12 years dedicated to the progress of Aminiyaa and its students will never diminish.
