Family moved to temporary shelter after apartment fire

Authorities have begun providing temporary housing to a family of six, after a fire early Thursday caused extensive damages to their apartment in Male’ City's Henveiru district.

The fire, which broke out at a three-room apartment on the third floor of H. Hiriyage, was reported to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) at 03:57 am. Firefighters put out the fire at 04:23 am.

The fire rendered the apartment inhabitable without extensive repairs.

According to a spokesperson from MNDF, the fire originated from one of the bedrooms.

“The fire also affected the other two bedrooms, in addition to the bedroom from where the fire originated,” said the spokesperson.

The cause of the fire is unclear at this point.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)’s spokesperson told Sun the fire affected a family of six; two adult females, one adult male, and three children.

They have been provided temporary housing.

The spokesperson said it is unclear how long they will require temporary housing.

“We are unable to say for how long it will take before they can move back to their apartment as we have yet to conduct the necessary assessments,” said the spokesperson.

Photos shared by MNDF show extensive damages to one of the bedrooms.
