Maldives Customs Service, on Wednesday, announced the seizure 10 kilos of drugs valued at MVR 12 million from the luggage of a passenger who traveled to Maldives by air.
Customs said that drugs were seized last Saturday, from the luggage of a 48-year-old Pakistani who traveled to the Maldives from Dubai.
They detailed that his luggage was searched over suspicions of the possibility of drugs being hidden inside.
Customs said that the drugs found tested positive for heroin during the first phase of testing.
The drugs seized from the luggage weigh 10.002 kilos, which Customs places the street value at MVR 12 million, or more.
The authority noted that the drugs and the man had been handed over to Maldives Police Service.
Traffic of drugs into the Maldives is quite a common occurrence. However, larger quantities of drugs are usually trafficked via sea routes.
