Homosexuality case: Nazim and Colonel Nasheed released from custody

Prominent lawyer and Parliament Speaker’s Mohamed Nasheed’s younger brother Nazim Sattar and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed) who were arrested on suspicions of engaging in homosexual relations with Bangaldeshi sex worker, Alamgiri, have been released from custody.

Abul Rahman Rafeeu, a police officer working in the Drug Enforcement Department, who was also arrested over the case was also released alongside them.

Sun has learned that the three men were released after the remand period permitted by the Criminal Court for their detention had expired. It is unclear as to why they were not brought before the court to extend their remand.

Police forwarded the case of the three men for Prosecutor General’s Office requesting charges on last Tuesday.

Former Raajje TV journalist Abdulla Naseer is also currently detained by the police over suspicions of engaging in homosexuality.

A string of videos showing men engage in sexual relations with Alamgiri has been leaked from June onwards. In an earlier statement, Police have stated that cases pertaining to homosexuality are being investigated as serious matters.

Staff from Education Ministry and Home Ministry have also been suspended over suspicions of engaging in sexual relations with Alamgiri.

An employee working at People’s Majlis and two from Maldives Customs have also been suspended over suspicions of engaging in homosexual relations. However, it is unclear whether their cases relate to Alamgiri’s.

Ibrahim Rafiu who was serving as a Senior Executive Director at the National Centre for the Holy Quran was terminated from his post yesterday over a leaked video which allegedly shows him engaging in homosexual relations with Alamgiri. A muezzin working at a Hulhumale’ mosque have also been accused of engaging in homosexual relations with Alamgiri. 

An officer serving in Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) was also confirmed to have been suspended on Tuesday over engaging in sexual relations with Alamgiri.

Sun has learned that over 100 people engaged in homosexual relations with Alamgiri.
