Maldives Media Council (MMC) members convene for a meeting.

Maldives Media Council (MMC), on Thursday, has filed a complaint with Maldives Police Service regarding Mees Media’s non-permitted use of other medias’ content on their social media pages and website.

Commenting on the matter, MMC’s President Mohamed Shafaau Hassan said that the case was brought to the attention of the Council by a member after taking note of it.

“When using content of another media, there is no issue if the respective media’s permission has been obtained,” he had said.

In this regard, he pointed out that ‘Adafi’ was an application being operation following an agreement with media outlets.

“By no means, to stop it. But because it is an offense to do without copyrights. That is why the complaint was submitted,” he had said.

Mees Media, through their website posts the content of many other media outlets. To read the news, a monthly subscription of MVR 30 needs to be made.

Shafaau said that the transfer account stated for the subscription fee is a personal account of an individual.

As per the law, using written content of an individual without copyrights is an offense punishable by a fine between MVR 30,000 to MVR 50,000.
