President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced he intends to run for re-election in the upcoming 2023 presidential elections.
He made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday evening.
It marks the first official confirmation by President Solih, who came to power in 2018 with the backing of a coalition of four parties, that he intends to run for a second term.
In response to a question by a reporter, President Solih said that if would be impossible for a single political party to win the presidential election alone, and that it would require a coalition.
“It would be impossible unless with the joint effort of multiple parties. I am confident I will win in 2023 with an MDP-led coalition,” he said.
President Solih said that what was most important was that MDP win the election. He said that it was what was best for the entire country.
He also said that the current development projects needed to continue uninterrupted.
“The assurance I will give is that I am confident I can win the 2023 presidential election. If MDP wants to rule, I am here as a choice,” he said.
President Solih said that whether MDP would hold a primary or not would be decided in the upcoming MDP congress.
