Shafau elected new president of Maldives Media Council

Mohamed Shafau Hassan.

Maldives Media Council (MMC) member Mohamed Shafau Hassan has been elected as the new president of the council.

Shafau told Sun he was elected to the position with the unanimous vote of nine members who attended the MMC meeting earlier Wednesday.

He said that he planned on meeting MMC members at the earliest opportunity, and planning the work ahead.

“There’s very little time left until the end of the term,” he said.

Shafau replaces Shahuban Fahmy, who resigned from his post on Tuesday, amid concern over the allegations of money laundering against him.

At the MMC meeting on Tuesday, Shahuban said that the allegations against him were politically motivated.

He said that the allegations had made it difficult to venture out in public, and that he no longer felt safe.

The allegations against Shahuban is linked to the Ponzi scheme allegedly run by Kings Capital Holdings, a company owned by his brother, Alhan Fahmy.

Both Shahuban and Alhan have been questioned by police in connection to the case.
