Maldives National Party (MNP)’s leader, Dhangethi MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim states the woman elected to the Vilimale’ seat on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) must be someone capable of fulfilling the legal duties and obligations the seat calls for.

Nazim made the comment during the inauguration of MNP candidate Aminath Sheeza’s campaign center in Vilimale’ on Friday evening.

Nazim said that Sheeza was someone who had both the capabilities and experience to undertake the legal duties of a WDC member.

He said that though a the Vilimale’ constituency was represented in the Male’ City Council by a woman, he was not satisfied with her efforts to advocate for the rights of women in the council.

“We have yet to see the female councilor elected to Vilimale’ constituency effectively advocate. Therefore, this constituency needs someone who can fulfil her legal obligations,” he said.

Nazim described Sheeza as a brave and capable woman who can provide the council the counsel and assistance it needs to protect and support women.

“Sheeza is a woman who can get this done. I have no doubt Sheeza is someone who will loudly raise the voice of all you beloved women, and will not back down in her work,” he said.

Speaking at the inauguration, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Usham said members of the WDC were vested great responsibilities and power.

He said that the most important work of WDC was to counsel the council regarding development and municipal work.

“I don’t think the current WDC has done an effective job to counsel the Male’ City Council. I don’t see them fulfilling their responsibilities either,” he said.

Usham said the WDC was charged with key role in protecting human rights in local communities, increasing religious awareness, and empowering women in the social and political field.

Sheeza is competing for the Vilimale’ seat against Fathimath Nazima from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The election is scheduled to be held on May 14.

The Vilimale’ seat on Male’ City’s WDC fell vacant following the death of Aminath Eman, a politician from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in a road accident earlier this year.
