Local actor Hussain Sobah has denied any involvement in the 12 kilos of drugs seized by police in a recent counter-narcotics operation.

The drugs were seized in a joint operation by the Drug Enforcement Department and Intelligence Department from a boat on Monday night. Police confirmed they arrested a 37-year-old Indian man in connection to the case.

According to the police, the Criminal Court extended the remand of total three suspects in connection to the case on Tuesday.

Sun has been informed that while Sobah was questioned by the police in connection to the case, he wasn’t formally arrested.

Following media reports of his arrest, Sobah released a video message via Facebook on Tuesday, denying any involvement in the case.

“Some people I know called me and asked to rent one of my speedboats for a trip to Sh. Atoll and I said yes,” said Sobah in his video message.

While Sobah did not specify where in Sh. Atoll the boat made the trip to, he did say that he rented his boat or MVR 46,800.

He said that it was the usual rate for such a trip.

Sobah also said he received an advance payment of MVR 20,000.

Sobah said that the people on the boat informed him that they ran into engine trouble, and that went to the jetty when they said they would be arriving in Hulhumale’ on Monday night.

“The police were there when I arrived. They came and asked me if the boat belonged to me. I said yes. And I explained what happened,” he said.

Sobah said that he was detained by the police for four hours. He said he was taken to the police station to clarify information, and had nothing to do with the drugs.

“I wouldn’t be here if there was any suspicion of my involvement in this,” he said.
