A new medical facility has been opened in suburban Hulhumale’ to treat COVID-19 patients.
The new facility, the Infectious Disease Management Center, was opened on Tuesday morning.
It is the second medical facility for COVID-19 patients in Hulhumale’, after the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility.
Health Ministry said the new facility was opened as part of the government’s commitment to improve the quality of care provided to COVID-19 patients.
The center will provide both emergency and in-patient care, said the Health Ministry.
The Infectious Disease Management Center is a 272-bed facility, including 44 ICU beds.
However, Health Ministry said the current functional capacity of the center was 35 in-patient beds, including five ICU beds.
The building where the new facility was opened in was originally used as a distribution center, and later as a quarantine facility for migrant workers after the COVID-19 pandemic hit Maldives in 2020.
Maldives has recorded 173,064 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 488 new cases on Monday. 158,234 patients have since recovered, while 297 have died from complications.
