The Indian man who was arrested for stabbing his wife in their apartment in Male’ City on Wednesday told the court that he stabbed himself in the stomach when the police arrived.

The domestic violence case was reported to police at approximately 06:20 am on Wednesday.

Sreenivasan Subramani, 27, told the Criminal Court during his remand hearing on Wednesday evening that he stabbed his wife, also an Indian national, with a knife during a verbal dispute.

He told the court that he panicked when he saw the police arrive, and stabbed himself with a stomach with a different knife.

Police told the court that the officers who attended the scene saw a large quantity of blood in the apartment. The officers found two knifes. The blade of one of the knives was missing.

According to the police, the victim had two wounds on her thigh. An X-ray taken from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) showed the blade lodged inside the victim’s thigh.

The court remanded Subramani to custody of police for 15 days, citing threat to public safety.

A video of the woman being escorted out of the apartment by police show her clothes drenched in blood from the waist down. She is heard sobbing as she is guided down the stairs.

Information released by police show 23 cases of domestic violence were reported to authorities last January alone.
