Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Transport Ministry has not been cooperative in the Council’s efforts to solve the parking problems faced in the Male’ City.

Speaking at a function last night to meet Henveiru residents, Muizzu noted that they have requested information needed by the Council to solve the parking problem from the Transport Ministry on multiple occasions.

“Vehicles are being important to Male as it is. There is no limit to this regard. The laws state that it is the Council’s responsibility to set a limit – but the government is not giving us the chance to do so,”

“We have requested Transport Ministry to provide us information such as how many vehicles are presently in use in Male’ City, how many have been imported, the types of vehicles and such. These details are needed in order to set a limit. Without knowing any such information, how can we proceed?” he had said.

Muizzu also noted that the Ministry has repeatedly told them that they would provide the information when asked about it – but has still failed to keep their word.

When questioned by Sun regarding Muizzu’s allegations, State Minister of Transport Hidhaya Naseer denied the allegations.

“We have been cooperative. In this regard, a paper has already been sent to set an age limit of vehicles. It is with the Cabinet right now. We can only update the Council after they make a decision,” she had said.

She further added that an online meeting has been held between the Ministry and the Council prior to this – where discussions were held regarding the matter.

“It is not true to say that we have been completely uncooperative,” she added.
