The number of COVID-19 cases detected in the island of Dh. Kudahuvadhoo has increased to 19, indicating a community spread on the island.

Dh. Atoll Hospital Community Health Officer Aishath Muneera said to Sun that the island was now in the midst of a community spread.

"Because school students have also tested positive for the virus. The families of the students have also tested positive. We first discovered that airport staffers tested positive for the virus," said Muneera.

She added that more cases could be detected in the coming days.

The first cases identified in the island were airport staffers who became symptomatic for the virus. They were detected on March 17.

The Maldives has so far confirmed more than 22,000 cases.
