Maldivian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that Maldivians can no longer travel to Russia unless via a direct flight originating from Maldives.

Maldivian travelers to Russia, with the exception of those intending to work, study or reside in Russia, were previously granted 90 days on arrival visa.

The ease was provided under “Agreement between the Government of Maldives and the Government of the Russian Federation on mutual exemption of visa requirements for nationals of the Republic of Maldives and for nationals of the Russian Federation” which came into effect on July 25, 2019.

Maldivian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that as part of stricter border control measures implemented by Russia due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Maldivians can now travel to Russian only via a direct flight originating from Maldives.

Maldivian Foreign Ministry has urged Maldivians traveling to Russia to be cautious of these restrictions and to check for the most updated travel guidelines prior to travelling, as the guidelines are subject to change.
