Ex-president: MDP activist used profanity, violated personal space

Former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik.

Former President of the Maldives Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has spoken out once again regarding the verbal attack on him and his spouse by an activist of MDP yesterday.

Dr. Waheed said that the activist had not called him a ‘traitor’ but used profane language.

MDP said in a statement last night that Ibrahim Jaufaru, who worked as a photographer for the party activities had called Dr. Waheed a ‘traitor’ and used words of disapproval towards the former president.

MDP said that Dr. Waheed had referred to Jaufaru with a moniker that resulted in the verbal commotion.

The party also condemned Dr. Waheed for tweeting in a manner that had seemed Jaufaru had attempted to physically assault the former President. The incident was hotly debated in the parliament today, where MDP has a supermajority.

“The Majlis discussion about me was unwarranted and wasteful today. First, I don’t recall Jaufar calling me baagee (traitor), but I heard “H***** B*****” “Gaumu bandu alhaali vagu” etc. totally unjustified. Second, I did not lodge any charges against Jaufar.” Read a tweet by Dr. Waheed.

Dr. Waheed also said that the activist had violated the personal of former first lady, Ilham Hussain.

“Sad that Hon. Speaker and MPs whose function is to legislate and uphold the law can so easily ask the public to break it and harass me.” read a second tweet by Dr. Waheed.
