133 migrants taken into police custody in Thilafushi unrest

Migrant workers gathered in K. Thilafushi on June 2, 2020.

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, took over 100 migrant workers into custody following unrest in K. Thilafushi.

According to a police spokesperson, 133 migrant workers have been taken into police custody.

Meanwhile, two police officers who attempted to control the unrest sustained injuries.

Police did not specify the cause of the altercation and firmly refuted rumors that two of its officers were held hostage.

Altercations involving migrant workers have been increasingly identified in recent times. 

A similar commotion at a migrant accommodation facility in Hulhumale saw migrants throw chairs at police officers maintaining security. 

HDC had stated that the commotion was caused due to delays in food arrangements.

Migrant workers of a private company also recently vandalized two properties of the company which inflicted damage totaling MVR 12 million. Violent altercations on the property had left many migrants with injuries.
