Health professionals in the Maldives have stated that the current projections regarding COVID-19 show that 900 deaths may occur in the Maldives.

Projections at the start of the community spread in Male’ City identified on April 15 showed that the country may suffer around 2000 deaths as a result of COVID-19.

In a press conference tonight, journalists posed the question regarding the fatality rate based on current projections. Dr. Sheena responded that the revised projections now showed a reduction in half for the number of fatalities that could be recorded.

“Previously we estimated at the beginning of the community spread that 2000 fatalities may be recorded. The current projections now show that the rate is below 900.” Says Dr. Sheena.

She added that the rate could be brought down even further if things are run in a manner that does not overload the system.

The current projections show that the disease may infect 77,305 people in the country in total. 13,568 may have to be hospitalized with 5,805 people needing ICA care.
