In a press conference underway, the National Emergency Operations Center spokesperson Mabrouq Azeez has announced the confirmation of six new positive cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives.
Mabrouq stated that the individuals tested positive were two locals, two Bangladeshi nationals, and two Indian nationals. A total of 30 cases have been identified in the Maldives so far today.
With the new cases confirmed today, the total figure for the country currently stands at 648. The majority of the cases have been identified in Male' City. The populous capital confirmed a community case of the virus on April 15. Since then, the whole city and the surrounding areas are in full lockdown and curfew.
Most virus cases confirmed in the Maldives have come from foreign nationals, mostly migrant workers. With cases number still increasing, although, at a lower rate than compared to a few days ago, the Maldives has so far recorded two deaths from the virus.
The deceased, are an elderly Maldivian woman and a middle-aged Bangladeshi national. 20 individuals have also made recoveries after being infected with the virus.
