One of the positive cases confirmed for COVID-19 today includes an 83-year old local who has a number of health complications, the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has announced.

NEOC spokesperson Mabrouq Azeez said that the individual was a patient with hypertension and long-term illnesses which meant that the condition with COVID-19 could deteriorate.

NEOC announced that 22 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 today. There are currently 714 active cases of the virus in the country. Out of the eight deaths confirmed for the virus in the Maldives, four are elderly locals. The virus is particularly dangerous to elderly individuals and people with chronic illnesses.

The Maldives began relaxing the lockdown in a bid to promote economic activity and return to normal life in late May. It will enter the second phase of the lockdown easements by tomorrow, which will see the residents of Male’ City outdoors without a permit for the first time in two months.
