The number of contacts connected with positive cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives has been reduced significantly, National Emergency Operations Center medical officer, Dr. Ibrahim Afzal says.

Speaking in a news conference underway right now, Dr. Afzal stated that the lockdown in place was effective and that this was the reason why the number of contacts has been significantly reduced.

At the beginning of the community spread in Male’ City, contacts of positive cases were identified in hundreds. Tonight’s press conference saw Dr. Afzal state that the contacts from positive cases as of recently were mostly asymptomatic. The number of contacts was also significantly reduced, noted Dr. Afzal.

“The reason for this may be the lockdown. We see that the contacts of positive cases are reduced since contact between the public is reduced during the lockdown.” Dr. Afzal says.

Cluster numbers of positive cases have also been reduced significantly, pointed out Dr. Afzal.
