The task force of the government in the northern city of Kulhudhuffushi has decided to uphold the curfew imposed on the city but introduce some easements for the convenience of the citizens.
The curfew in the city was imposed on April 21, after an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 visited and made contact with several residents of the city.
After the individual was tested positive, the only city in the north of the country was placed in lockdown. Several other northern islands are also under monitoring mechanisms to prevent the spread of the virus, which has already racked up more than 450 cases in the country.
The curfew was later extended on April 23, to expire today at noon.
In an announcement made, the Kulhudhuffushi Council stated that it had decided to uphold the lockdown and curfew on the city. However, residents would be permitted to go outdoors for essential purposes from 6:00 to 15:30. Residents will still be allowed to go outdoors after these hours, after obtaining a permit from the council.
The Council stated that the move was a result of COVID-19 cases being identified in the north of the country.
The easements and safety measures were introduced in light of the situation in the north and considering the fact that Kulhudhuffushi was the central hub of economic, medical and transport services of the north, which meant that the city is frequented by a large number of people from other islands for essential purposes.
The Council also thanked the cooperation from the citizens for the safety measures imposed on the city.
