Govt. decides on MVR 5000 unemployment allowance

The government has decided to provide an allowance of MVR 5000 to those who were made redundant from their posts of employment due to the current economic situation in the Maldives.

The unemployment allowance has been spoken about by the government, which has stressed on private businesses in the country against making such redundancies. The country has been faced with a massive economic impact due to the global pandemic COVID-19.

Several instances of employers sending their staff on no-pay leaves have also been reported across the country as businesses try to mitigate costs and cope with the impact of the virus.

Speaking in the parliamentary Committee on National Security & Foreign Relations, Economic Minister Fayyaz announce the decision to provide MVR 5000 to those who were made redundant.

“Out of these, we have decided to provide MVR 5000 per month for three months from April, May, and June. From then, to take into consideration and review the situation, find a way to source the funds, and continue on.” Said the Minister.

The government has requested anyone and everyone who suffered a situation of detriment regarding employment to register at the government’s job center portal. Cases of redundancies, wage cuts, and no pay leaves can be lodged with the portal. Around 1300 such complaints have been received via the portal so far.
