Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed has warned that steps will be taken against those who issue threats to others in the same manner taken against those mock the religion of Islam.

Ab tweet by the Commissioner today read that steps were being taken against those who harras and mock the religion but also warned that steps will also be taken against those who issue threats against others and incite violence. He also stated that such people were being monitored and urged the public to notify the police regarding such behavior.

The Commissioners tweet followed the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Home Minister Imran Abdulla’s words that actions will be taken against those who harass and mock the religion as well as people who incite violence and issue threats of violence.

Such stands were taken by the government after a report by the Maldives Democracy Network hit the headlines for mocking and belittling the religion of Islam. The organization has now been suspended by the Youth Ministry.

The report used language accusing the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) of extremism and belittled the incident of Isra and Miraj. The report attracted the anger of the public towards the organization with numerous calls on social media to ban the organization. These calls were also echoed by religious scholars and some political figures who also called for the dismissal of MDN members in government posts.
