Over 500 officers mobilized for day of parliamentary elections

Over 500 police officers have been mobilized to maintain security across Maldives on the April 6 – the day of the parliamentary elections, says Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed (MC Hameed).

Newly appointed CP, Hameed made the announcement during the inauguration of the information session by Elections Commission this Thursday morning to brief Maldives Police Service on the upcoming elections.

“Over 500 policers will operate outside polling stations throughout Maldivian islands and regions during the elections on April 6. The entire police institution will be engaged in elections-related affairs on the day,” said Hameed.

Hameed reaffirmed the commitment of the MPS to establish a peaceful and safe setting for the elections. He provided assurance the MPS would do everything in its power towards achieving its objective.

Hameed also provided assurance the MPS was willing to identify areas of further assistance in light of its past experiences with the EC during national elections.

He also noted the cases of vandalism reported from campaign headquarters of candidates, and said the MPS was investigating such cases and taking necessary action.

“It’s my hope police officers receive all information related to the elections through this program,” said Hameed.

Speaking at the inauguration of the information session, President of EC, Ahmed Shareef said the commission was committed to ensuring the parliamentary elections is transparent and free-and fair.

He said the commission was hopeful the elections go smoothly.

Shareef said members of the general public will not be allowed to gather outside polling stations during the elections, and that the MPS will play a key role in maintaining security outside polling station.

“And police officers themselves can only enter polling stations will express permission from those in charge of the polling stations,” said Shareef.

The information session was attended by 66 police officers.
