Maldives co-sponsors human rights resolutions

Maldives co-sponsored several resolutions on human rights on the 40th United Nations Human Rights Council session. 

Maldives delegation actively contributed to the four week session that started on 25th February 2019 and delivered, 21 formal statements and actively participated in the negotiation of the 29 resolutions adopted during the session.

The Maldives also delivered two joint statements - a statement on behalf of the newly formed 14-Member Human Rights Council Membership Contact Group and a statement on behalf of the Group of Small Island Developing States.

Statements were delivered by the Maldivian delegation on thematic discussions covered in the Program of Work of the Council and co-sponsored resolutions on Human Rights Situation in Syria, Human Rights Situation in Myanmar, as well as resolutions on Rights of Child, Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law.

Maldives also co-sponsored resolutions that they had not co-sponsored in the previous sessions; Resolution on recognizing the contribution of environmental human rights defenders to the enjoyment of human rights, environmental protection and development, Resolutions on the Situation of Human Rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Resolution on Rights of the Child.

Delegations of Maldives also participated in both formal and informal engagements on the side lines of the Human Rights Council, and co-hosted a reception with Permanent Mission of Netherlands, United Kingdom and Universal Rights Group to celebrate the beneficiaries of the SIDS/LDS Trust Fund attending the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council.
