US commits USD 3M grant assistance to Maldives for sustainable development

The US government has made the decision to award Maldives a grant of USD 3 million to fund sustainable development projects.

The US and Maldives signed two documents in a function at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Wednesday morning; Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Fulbright Academic Exchange Program.

The DOAG – which awards Maldives a grant assistance of USD 3 million – was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel, and by the USAID Mission Director Reed Aeschliman on behalf of the US government.

The USD 3 million is to be used to fund sustainable development programs to improve the resilience of individuals and communities.

The second document, the MoU on Fulbright Exchange Academic Program, was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, and on behalf of the US government by US Ambassador to Maldives, Alaina Tepliz.

FEAP is a program that aims to improve relations between the citizens of the Maldives and the US through education activities.

The signing was witnessed by senior staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials from the US Embassy in Colombo.
