Ex-President Yameen taken to Maafushi Prison

Former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been taken to the Special Protection Unit of Maafushi Prison where he will remain detained pending the outcome of his money laundering trial.

Chief Judge of Criminal Court, Ahmed Hailam granted the State’s request to keep Yameen detained at a remand facility pending the outcome of his money laundering trial this Monday after the prosecution presented evidence to prove witness tampering through bribery.

The pretrial hearing this Monday began at 1:30 pm and lasted over two hours, upon conclusion of which Yameen was transported to Maafushi Prison on a Maldives Police Service speedboat.

Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police Izmiya Zahir confirms Yameen was taken to Maafushi Prison.

Information officer of Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman reports Yameen has arrived at Maafushi Prison. He reports the former President will be kept at the Special Protection Unit of the prison.

Speaking during the hearing, Yameen denied he engaged in witness tampering. He said the only evidence the prosecution had in the case were computer generated bank statement which could not be tampered with.
