Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ahmed Naseer is to be questioned by the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament regarding the sudden dismissal of then-Head of Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) after the unit shared suspicious financial transaction reports involving former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom with the authorities in 2018.

The request for questioning of Naseer was lodged with the Independent Institutions Committee by North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla.

In a letter to the Chair of the Independent Institutions Committee, Eva wrote that the-Head of the FIU, Abdulla Ashraf was dismissed without sufficient reason.

She wrote that the dismissal came shortly after the FIU lodged a case with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) regarding a transfer of USD 1 million from Yameen’s account at the Bank of Maldives (BML) to an escrow account by ACC, and a case with the Maldives Police Service regarding an issue with funding for Yameen’s presidential campaign.

Eva wrote that she wished to question Naseer over the decision.

The letter was dated February 17th.
