President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to start projects to establish clean water and sanitation services in all Maldivian islands within the first three years of his presidency.
Speaking during the inauguration of the MVR 61 million water and sanitation system in K. Dhiffushi by Ali Fulhu Thuthu Foundation (AFT Foundation) this Saturday morning, Solih said establishing water and sanitation services in all Maldivian islands was one of his administration’s key pledges.
He said that USD 102 million been allocated in the budget for the year 2019 to establish water services in 50 islands and sanitation services in 72 islands.
Solih said it was his goal to start establishing water and sanitation services for all Maldivian people within the first three years of his administration.
“My goal is to start establishing water and sanitation services for all Maldivian people by the end of the first three years of my presidency. In Sha Allah, this will be done,” said Solih.
Solih said that Maldives currently only has water services 34 islands and sanitation services in 64 islands. And that it was a low rate compared to the income of the country.
“I note that the rate of basic services to people is low compared to the income earned by the country. And I also note that this is not how it should be,” said Solih.
He said the government needs to assistance of local businesses to establish basic services to the people.
“And I believe, business owners are ready to lend their assistance.”
