Supreme Court orders stay to the ruling to reinstate MPs

Supreme Court of the Maldives have ordered a stay in their ruling on 1 February to reinstate the 12 MPs who lost their parliamentarian seat.

A court order issued moments ago ordered the Elections Commission and the Parliament to hold the implementation of 12 MPs that were reinstated on the Supreme Court ruling on 1 February 2018.

And the court order was issued upon the request of the Attorney General, Mohamed Anil.

According to the Supreme Court ruling, the decision to stay the portion of the ruling was made to think on an make on the case within the constitution, legal procedure and government considerations due to the nature of the case.

On 1 February, Supreme Court passed an order, with the unanimous vote of all five judges, overruling their court order in July 2017 that said that MPs who leaves their political parties would lose their parliamentary seat.

The court said that no MPs have lost their seat. And the first sessions of the parliament this year should have all the MPs involved.

The Supreme Court ruling tonight ordered to suspended those two parts of the ruling on 1 February.

While the Supreme Court has made such a ruling tonight, a special parliament sitting outside the session has been set and the 13 MPs who lost the seats have been invited as well.
