Four Maldivian students achieve world top O' Level results

Four Maldivian students have been awarded top achievers awards for gaining top scores at the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O' level) examination in 2013.

Aminath Izfa Amir won the top achievers award for scoring perfect marks in Mathematics and English Language, Shaifa Abdul Shukuoor in Travel and Tourism, Zeek Ashraf Ali and Ahmed Rishwan in Mathematics.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom handed the awards at the O’level top 10 achievers award ceremony on Saturday night.

An additional 22 students won awards for attaining different international places in the O’level exam from subjects; English Language, Accounting, Travel and Tourism, Chemistry, Economics, Biology, Business Studies and Commerce.

The award ceremony also saw 40 students take 1st place in the local top 10 slots for O’level 2013. A total of 478 students were amongst the local top 10 achievers in 2013, compared to 426 students in 2012.

Some 35 schools won the achievement award for producing the best O’level results and 62 schools, 59 of them from the atolls, won the progressive award. Eight students deprived of hearing also sat the GCE O’level examination from Jamaaluddeen School last year.

A total of 6,181 Maldivian students from 194 school sat the GCE O’level examination in 2013 and had a 5-subject pass rate of 43 percent, an increase of 2 percent compared to 41 percent in 2012.
