Revenue bills must be passed before holding government accountable: President

President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the parliament should only try to hold the government accountable for its actions after facilitating ways to increase government revenue by passing the relevant bills.

The president made this remark while addressing the people of Hithadhoo last night, as part of his visit to the island prior to the Local Council Election.

He said that the new government has, over the past few months, not loaned any money from any banks or foreign organisations to pay salaries to its employees. He said that salaries are paid by generating income.

He said that the government makes continuous efforts to improve public services, and since civil servants play a major role in these efforts, more work must be done to increase awareness among civil servants and make them more responsible.

He said that civil servants must work hard to achieve the party’s manifesto goals over the next five years.

President Yameen stressed that his government will not discriminate based on colour or party affiliations, and that it will serve all citizens equally.

He reminded the importance of elected councillors working with the government.

He described the people of Addu as an industrious people who have always strived for development and education.
