Elections Commission has decided to postpone the Atoll Council Election for Gaafu Alifu Vilingili.
Elections Commission said that however, Atoll Council Elections for Gemanafushi and Dhaandhoo will take place as per schedule Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference today, Elections Commissions Member Ali Mohamed Manik said that the decision to postpone the Atoll Council Election for Vilingili follows a Supreme Court ruling that the commission’s decision, whereby it rejected the candidacy of one of the independent candidates, was incorrect.
Subsequently, Elections Commission has accepted the candidacy of sitting Vice President of Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council Masood Ahmed.
Elections Commission said that the Supreme Court ruling came after it had completed preparations for Atoll Council Election for Vilingili, but it decided to delay the election since Masood must be given time to campaign.
Ali Mohamed Manik said that a date for the Vilingili Atoll Council Election will be announced later.
