The project to establish a sewerage system in Laamu Gan carried out by Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been inaugurated today.

The agreement for this MVR 85 million project was signed between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and MWSC on 18 February 2013. The project is to be completed by the end of November 2015.

The project was inaugurated today by Minister of Environment and Energy Ibrahim Thorig. The ceremony was also attended by Laamu Atoll Council President Mohamed Rasheed and Laamu Gan Council Vice President Hussain Haleem.

Speaking at the ceremony, both the Atoll Council President and Island Council Vice President noted that Gan lacks proper water, sewerage and waste management systems, and also faces the problem of erosion.

Minister Thorig said that the people’s concerns will be taken into account, and that the government will work towards solving the problems of waste management and water in the island over the next five years.

The project was officially inaugurated today, but MWSC’s consultant for the project Germany’s Hydroplan has already completed 25 percent of the sewerage system in the island.

MWSC said that even though the completion date is stated as November 2015, the project will be completed by the end of November 2014.
