Elections Commission has said the Local Council Election will he held on Saturday 18 January, regardless of the refusal by some candidates to endorse the final voters’ lists.
Secretary General of the Elections Commission Asim Abdul Sattar told Sun today that the commission will not allow candidates extra time to sign the voters lists and that the election will continue on Saturday as scheduled.
“Although the candidates have not signed the lists, the election will be held on Saturday. We cannot allow more time to sign the eligible voters’ lists,” Asim said.
He said the commission will continue with the election as scheduled, unless directed otherwise by the Supreme Court or the State security forces.
Asim said the commission has asked the Attorney General’s Office for an opinion on having to follow the presidential election Supreme Court guideline, which requires the commission to seek endorsements from all candidates to hold the election. However, the commission has now received a reply from the AG Office, the commission’s Secretary General said today.
