Former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof has stated that his ministerial post in the government of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was not a gift, remarking on how individuals who previously supported him are now opposing him.
Mahloof departed from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday to assume a state position within the current administration.
In a social media post, Mahloof recalled commencing his work with the MDP in 2015 and having made significant sacrifices to bring the MDP government to power for a second term in 2018.
He noted his two-year inactivity in political affairs, mentioning that the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) had been his strongest critic. He described the decision as difficult but did not elaborate on his reasons for making it.
Mahloof expressed gratitude to those who welcomed his decision. On X, he also extended thanks to former President Solih and all MDP members who supported him during his membership, acknowledging the opportunity provided. He further offered apologies to any members dissatisfied with his decision, expressing hope for continued friendship.
Despite his political inactivity since the conclusion of the MDP's term, Mahloof has openly criticized the current administration through social media posts. Following these criticisms, his public voice became less prominent. Subsequently, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was observed attending the closing ceremony of a badminton tournament hosted by Mahloof last Saturday evening.
It is noteworthy that while Mahloof has left the MDP, his wife, Nazra Naseem, remains a member of the party and serves as a consultant to the Male’ City Council.
Mahloof's political career began with the now-abolished Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), under the leadership of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He later played a key role in the formation of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which emerged from defections within the DRP. He then joined the MDP, a party he had previously been highly critical of, after his relationship with President Abdullah Yameen deteriorated. At that time, Mahloof was a Member of Parliament and actively worked against the Yameen government.
Mahloof served as Youth Minister for five years in the MDP government; however, he was suspended on corruption charges related to the MMPRC scandal.
