There is no need to provide temporary shelter in the city of Addu following the damage caused by the tornado that hit the Maradhoo-Feydhoo district, the Addu City Council said on Monday evening.

The roofs of several houses were damaged by the tornado in Maradhoo-Feydhoou district this morning, with five homes and the funeral house affected.

When contacted by Sun, Maradhoo-Feydhoou Councilor Khalida Mohamed said the tornado only tore away half of the roof of one house while three or four pieces of tiling were thrown away from the roofs of the other houses.

No families need to relocate, as the affected homes sustained minimal damage, Khalidha said when Sun asked if any families had to be moved to a temporary shelter.

Khalida said the work of repairing the damaged roofs is being done in collaboration with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the work will be completed on Monday evening.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) told Sun that the council is working to identify the damage caused to Maradhoo-Feydhoo by the tornado and that NDMA will provide assistance to the council as soon as that work is completed.

When asked about it, the Maldives Meteorological Services (Met) told Sun on Monday that it was a sudden storm cloud in the area around 08:30 in the morning that created the tornado. The Met Office noted that the weather is not so bad for Addu city's islands on Monday.
