Marine research center opens at Jawakara Islands

A marine research center has been established at the Jawakara Islands Maldives.

The center was inaugurated on Monday by Tourism and Environment Minister Ahmed Toriq and business magnate Champa Mohamed ‘Uchchu’ Moosa.

A five-star property in Lhaviyani Atoll, the Jawakara Islands is one of 11 Maldivian resorts that Uchchu owns shared of.

The marine research center at Jawakara features laboratories for marine research, quarantine facilities, a classroom, and a sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation institute with vets.

The inauguration of the center kicked off with a workshop by some 25 professors.

The center at Jawakara is set to be used by both local and international universities for research, and will also offer training for student researchers.

Monday’s inauguration ceremony was also attended by Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan.

Uhchcu’s Crown & Champa Resorts has supported various environmental and social initiatives through its philanthropic arm over the years.
