Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that Air Arabia has officially commenced operations at the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).

Air Arabia held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to inaugurate the use of VIA's new terminal. Previously, this terminal was exclusively used by the national carrier.

Following that, Air Arabia became the second airline to utilize the terminal. Passengers who checked in at the new terminal of VIA reported a smooth check-in experience, according to MACL. The company said that they are dedicated to simplifying airport services for international airlines.

MACL also highlighted that Air Arabia's launch of the new terminal will facilitate easier access for tourists visiting the Maldives and enhance the tourism sector in the Maldives.

MACL mentioned that the start of a new airline service at the terminal is part of ongoing efforts to improve service. Thus, Air Arabia's launch of the new terminal will generate more opportunities for customers, the company stated.

The development of the terminal began in 2016 during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The new terminal was officially opened on July 26, which coincided with Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebration.

This terminal is expected to serve 75 million tourists. Approximately MVR 7 billion has been invested in the project.

Despite the new terminal being opened, it has only been utilized by the Maldivian airline until now. MACL had previously mentioned that other airlines would transition to the new terminal along with its services soon.
