State Trading Organization (STO) has partnered with British-Swedish AstraZeneca and Cancer Society of Maldives to conduct a training program for oncology nurses.

STO launched the Oncology Nurses Excellence (ONE) program in partnership with AstraZeneca – whose vaccine was one of the most widely used in efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 – back in April.

According to STO, the program is aimed at oncology nurses in the Maldives with the goal of enhancing the quality of care provided to cancer patients.

STO stated that the primary objective of the initiative is to unite experts in the field of cancer treatment to conduct workshops and training sessions for oncology nurses.

STO emphasized that the program will acknowledge the vital role oncology nurses play in cancer care and help prepare the Maldives to adapt to advancements in cancer treatment through collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The program is being conducted for oncology nurses at all main hospitals providing oncology services across the Maldives. It will feature four sessions. While two sessions have already been completed, 55 nurses took part in the first and 59 nurses took part in the second.

Commenting on the program, a representative from the Cancer Society described oncology nurses as the essential link between patients and the treatments they receive. The official highlighted that, beyond administering care, these nurses also educate patients about their condition and offer vital emotional support.
