President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday, has assured impartiality in enforcing the law.

The remark comes amid mounting concerns surrounding the incident involving 21-year-old Mariyam Yumnu’s fall from the ninth-floor of a house in Henveiru district. Leading up to the incident, she is established to have visited Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen’s house, where she attended a “party”, alongside two of his nephews.

The President, via a post on X on Thursday, assured impartiality when it comes to enforcing the constitution and laws and upholding the rule of law, adding there will be no discrimination in consideration of one’s stature, family ties, friends, wealth and political stand.

Yumnu was found injured on the rooftop of a warehouse in the Henveiru district at around 07:23am on Friday, April 18. According to the police, their investigation uncovered that she fell on her own from a skylight on the ninth-floor stairwell of the adjacent building, H. Fentenoy.

The police said before she fell, the young woman was in a “party” with a group of seven other people before her fall; five men and two women, where they are believed to have abused drugs.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen confirmed allegations that the first house they went to that night was his residence. He also confirmed that two of his nephews were among the group of individuals involved, but denied he knew anything about the “gathering.”

He also denied allegations he was influencing the police investigation into the case, particularly denying calling any senior government official or a law enforcement agency regarding the case

Minister Ameen, citing the “gathering” had come to his attention on the evening of Friday, stressed the “gathering” had not taken place in his apartment. He stressed that he has no control over events taking place outside of his apartment.

Notably, Izdhiyaam Mohamed Maumoon, the undersecretary for strategic communications at the President’s Office, who was confirmed by the Police to have been “partying” with the young girl before her fall, has been dismissed from his post while Dhaudh Ahmed Zilal, undersecretary for digital strategy, and the brother of Raudh Ahmed Zilal, who the police said was the last person who was known to have been with the young woman before she fell, was suspended.

On Thursday, nearly a week since Yumnu was found on the rooftop, the Police publicized the identities of the other eight people who had been with her, as well clips from CCTV footage from inside H. Fentenoy.

They are:

  • Raudh Ahmed Zilal, 21
  • Izdhiyaan Mohamed Maumoon, 28
  • Aishath Layaaly Iqbal, 22
  • Yoosuf Ahmed Akram, 22
  • Yoosuf Yassar Abdul Ghafoor, 28
  • Aminath Junaina Jamsheed, 24
  • Hussain Hamees Ali, 28
  • Ijaz Jaiz, 24

The police confirmed it was Raudh who had gone into H. Fentenoy with Yumnu.

Speaking at the press conference, CP Shujau said that, although it is not standard practice to release footage in such cases, the police are making an exception due to the public concerns and questions surrounding this particular incident.
