On Wednesday evening, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen stated that he was unaware of any inappropriate gatherings at his residence and only became informed of the incident afterward.
Many have been speculating that there was a connection between Ameen’s residence and the 21-year-old woman discovered unconscious on top of a roof after she had reportedly fallen from a high-rise.
Police held a closed press conference on Tuesday evening amid public speculation and allegations of foul play in the incident, where they had confirmed the involvement of seven individuals, which included three women and five men.
Meanwhile, netizens have been making multiple allegations about the incident including foul play about the woman’s fall from the building, which many are claiming may have been done by someone.
On Wednesday evening, hundreds of local youths had gathered in front of the criminal investigation building of Maldives Police Service demanding swift action against the culpable parties and justice for the woman.
Amid the protests, Ameen had come forward on popular micro-blogging site, X (formerly Twitter) confirming that two of the men who are being alleged of involvement were his nephews.
According to the minister, his nephews had already been interrogated in the case. Many people claim Ameen was attempting to divert the investigations due to the alleged involvement of his family members, but he denies this.
The minister further said that the building in question belonged to three of his siblings.
He claimed he learned of any incident linked to his residence around Friday afternoon. He further assured the incident did not take place in his apartment, and added he cannot control the events that occur outside of his own place of residence.
The minister also affirmed he had not attempted to coerce, nor acquire updates about the case from any law enforcement authority.
