Maldivian youths on Wednesday evening took to the streets demanding answers and police cooperation in the case of a local woman falling from a Male’ City building.
The case of a 21-year-old Maldivian female found on top of a rooftop, who had reportedly fallen from a neighboring building. Her discovery was reported to Maldives Police Service last Friday when she was found lying unconscious.
On Wednesday evening, hundreds of local youths had gathered near the criminal investigation building on Maldives Police in Henveiru district, demanding answers about the case. Many had accused the local law enforcement was trying to cover up the incident due to the high-profile individuals allegedly involved in the case.
The protesters had claimed police had been bought off by powerful families to whom the individuals in the case reportedly belonged to. They demanded local law enforcement to provide accurate answers about the case and ensure justice for the critically injured woman.
Additionally, the protesters demanded for the immediate arrest of the man who was reportedly with the woman and called for the immediate dismissal of the political figures involved in the incident.
Earlier on Tuesday during a press conference, police claimed they had learned the victim had fallen over the building by herself.
Following the press briefing, the public began criticizing police for their alleged incompetence. The public also expressed frustration claiming police were refusing to disclose information about the others involved in the incident.
Before police could provide further details regarding the case, several members of the public began speculating about potential foul play and alleged the woman might have been thrown or pushed off the building. Some have even claimed the role of influential political figures behind the incident.
At Tuesday’s press briefing, which was held discreetly, police provided several other details about the incident confirming the involvement of seven individuals, which included three women and five men.
All seven had visited a residence in central parts of Male’ City around 00:30hrs on the night of the incident, and they were seen leaving the house around 3:40hrs in the early morning. Around 4:00hrs, four of these individuals were seen entering a house situated in Ameenee Magu and 10 minutes after they had entered, the woman involved in the fall along with another man were seen leaving the premises. Both were captured on CCTV footage and had been on barefoot out on the streets.
After this, the woman was seen entering a Henveiru district house and the man who had been accompanying her was seen running behind her and enter the same building.
