President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states supporting and caring for children with autism is a national duty.

He made the remark in a message posted on his official X account to commemorate World Autism Day.

In his message, the President affirmed that every Maldivian child is invaluable to the nation and cherished. Citing children with autism possess unique talents and skills that are essential to the country, the President underscored that supporting and caring such children is a national duty.

World Autism Day is annually commemorated on April 2nd.

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurological and developmental condition that impacts how individuals interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.

Although Autism Spectrum Disorder can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental condition” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. While autism is considered a lifelong condition,  with appropriate support and interventions, individuals with autism can develop skills and lead fulfilling lives.

There are a large number of children with autism in the Maldives as well.
